Newt Wants to Win the Future

May 11, 2011

Newt Gingrich has formally jumped in as a candidate for President in 2012. But judging by the quote on the front of Newt.org, I’m not sure if he is running against Obama or against Joe Biden to serve as O’s veep:

Our Regulated Society

January 20, 2011

Obama has been quite busy reframing his image to the American people since the crushing results of the 2010 midterm elections. At the midway point of his first term, he is quickly attempting to cast himself as the middle-of-the-road independent in the mold of Bill Clinton post-1994 midterm elections. While this rebranding scheme might work on some, don’t let it fool you.

Writing in the opinion section of the Wall Street Journal, Obama admits that he loves the free market society that exists in America. As he wrote, “America’s free market has not only been the source of dazzling ideas and path-breaking products, it has also been the greatest force for prosperity the world has ever known.” And he is exactly right.

His next paragraph, however, contradicted this newfound admiration of that very system. Sounding like a typical politician, Obama felt the need to justify the role that government regulators play in the supposedly “free” marketplace.

Obama says, “throughout our history, one of the reasons the free market has worked is that we have sought the proper balance.” Of course, the balance he refers to is government regulators interfering in the marketplace. Obama continues, “[w]e have preserved freedom of commerce while applying those rules and regulations necessary to protect the public against threats to our health and safety and to safeguard people and businesses from abuse.”

This quick reversal inside of two paragraphs reminds one of George W. Bush’s similar reversal that he made in the fall of 2008 while advocating the bailout of the entire financial system. Bush stated that he had to go against the free market ideals that he so deeply believed in to preserve the free market system.

This Is What Change Looks Like?

March 22, 2010

Last night, Obama in his “victory speech”, claimed that the passage of the ObamaCare legislation was an example of what “change” looks like. If this is what change looks like, then please wake me up from this terrible dream.

The process to get to the final Health Care vote in the House of Representatives was one of severe corruption. From backroom deals, payoffs, and outright lying to the American people, this was hardly the change that anyone wanted in Washington. How can Obama claim that this process was clean or good? And more importantly, who would agree with such statements?

While we may not know every deal that was made, we do know that what happened in Congress over the past year should never happen again. There should not be a single person that could honestly claim that they were proud of this process.

If continued corruption inside of Congress is what “change” looks like, then we need to rid ourselves of these “change” agents and start over. Obama made a false choice of words when exclaiming victory on continuing the rich history of Congressional corruption.

The Lesser of Two Evils

February 1, 2010

Reading a great post on Campaign for Liberty today definitely got my thoughts rolling. If you want to read a great piece on the old argument about voting for “the lesser of two evils”, than give Adam de Angeli’s piece a read:

I recently read a member post that argued that one must sometimes support the lesser of two evils. The author explained it with a metaphor, by saying that, on the one hand, if offered two unhealthful foods, one could refuse to eat either of them, but if being forced to choose between an unhealthful food and poison, one would have to take the unhealthful food to avoid the poison. Likewise, he argued, having no choice but John McCain or Barack Obama, he should have voted for John McCain rather than the third-party candidate.

It is a popular, understandable belief; an intuitive tactical judgment. But upon close examination, it is principally due to this belief that our politicians get away with betraying us.

Indeed, it is essential for success that we defeat acceptance of the lesser of two evils. Therefore, let us examine what’s wrong with supporting the lesser of two evils.

2010 – A Year of Missed Opportunities

January 1, 2010

This year will be the big test for the Obama administration. With the 2010 Midterm Elections upon us, everyone is expecting the Republicans to have a clean sweep at the polls in November, but will that mean anything? Probably not.

What will the Republicans do if they take control of Congress? Probably nothing.

Will they repeal the Health Care plan should it pass? Probably not.

Will the clean up government? Probably not.

Will they shrink the size and scope of government? Probably not.

Will they actually remove troops from the wars overseas? Definitely not.

So what do I have to look forward to in 2010? Nothing.

The Top 8 Reasons for Big Government in the Past Decade

December 31, 2009

Here are the top eight moments of government expansion from the past decade, as decided by me. Obviously, this is my opinion and these are in no order of importance. These are simply the top eight events that led to continued growth of government.

You may be wondering why I didn’t do a list of ten, as seems customary with these end of year lists? 10 is simply an arbitrary length for these types of lists. I got tired of creating this list after 8.

Enjoy and have a Happy and Free New Year!

1. 9/11 – Aside from being an extremely tragic event, this event was used for political cover by politicians seeking to consolidate power. The very government that was unable to prevent these disasters after being warned of them became the “only source” to stop/prevent these types of terrible events. Has the U.S. Government been successful in stopping terrorism? No. Are terrorists any less powerful now than they were a decade ago? I have no idea. But the fact that I can’t easily figure that out tells me that something isn’t working.

2. The Patriot Act – Maybe the single worst Government intrusion into civil liberties in the modern era. As evidenced last week and countless times before, this piece of legislation has been proven unnecessary in preventing terrorism.

3. The Medicare Expansion – Remember the Republican congress pre-2006? These “limited government patriots” promoted and passed this nanny state expansion. This put us one step closer to the Universal Health Care program that is being promoted today.

Universal Coverage – The Book

December 22, 2009

With a Health Care bill almost on the desk of Barack Obama, what better book to read than one that may predict our future. The recently released Universal Coverage by Daniel Putkowski provides a good look at our not to distant future–that is if things don’t change quickly.

Buy the book here.

And here is a brief description of the book:

Bob Smith had it all. A beautiful house, a happy family, a rewarding career, and a government concerned with his well-being. But when his young son collapses, everything begins to crumble. Suddenly thrust into the world of Universal Coverage, Smith discovers that the ideals he voted for have spiraled out of control. The U.S. nationalized health care system has quickly devolved into a nightmare of unbearable waits, inevitable fraud, and uncertain outcomes presided over by a disinterested bureaucratic class. As Smith struggles to save his son’s life, he finds the only hope is Salvare, an unauthorized hospital ship providing world-class care to anyone with cash who’s willing to make the journey. A miracle at sea awaits aboard Salvare if Smith is brave enough to question the dangerous path his country has taken. Time is running out, and in matters of life and death, timing is everything.

Liberals Turn Focus on Obama

October 27, 2009

All summer long Mr. Obama was dodging attacks from all sides. He was forced to abandon the “Public Option” but it didn’t go away. Mr. Obama has been trying to fins his footing since the summer began. Now, the left is trying to keep him the hard-left progressive that they thought they elected.

From Politico:

Now that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has announced he’ll try to push through a health care reform bill with a public option, liberals are turning their focus — and their frustrations — on Barack Obama, the man who brought them to the outskirts of the progressive promise land.

Even before Reid announced Monday that he would back a public option plan that would allow individual states to opt out of the controversial plan, progressives had begun to shift from pressuring legislative leaders to stiffening Obama’s spine on the issue.

Democratic senators and House members didn’t need to shift their attention to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.: They have been grumbling for weeks that Obama needs to step up.

“I hope the president speaks out strongly for the public option — this health care bill really becomes his at this point,” said Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), one of about 30 Democrats who have pressured Reid to back the controversial option.

“[Reid] took the temperature of his caucus and found that he had to go with the public option,” added Brown. “And now it’s the president’s turn. … He needs to speak out strongly on a number of issues … affordability … the subsidy question — really on the whole package.”

Darcy Burner, executive director of the American Progressive Caucus Policy Foundation, which favors a robust public plan, said the fact that the White House was “hands off” has forced Reid and other leaders to take political risks they otherwise might not have incurred.

Everyone Freak Out, H1N1 is Coming!

October 25, 2009

Everyone is panicking currently over H1N1 (aka Swine Flu). But the group leading the way in the “freak out” department is our Federal Government.

From the Washington Post:

President Obama has declared H1N1 swine flu a national emergency, clearing the way for his health chief to give hospitals wider leeway in how they handle a possible surge of new patients, administration officials said Saturday.

The president granted Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius the power to lift some federal regulations for medical providers, including allowing hospitals to set up off-site facilities to increase the number of available beds and protect patients who are not infected.

Excellent!  Obama and Sebelius will save us.  Cancel the “freak out.”

Anyone remember the way they handled “Cash for Clunkers?”  Or, how about TARP?  Oh, and what about the Simulus money distribution?  This is definitely the most competent group of people to ward of H1N1.

Doug Mataconis at Below the Beltway said some good stuff in his coverage on this topic:

Of course, given some of what we’ve already seen, it’s hard to believe that the reactions could get any more hysterical than they’ve already gotten given the fact that, when you look at the numbers so far, H1N1 is far less contagious, and far less virulent than the worst-case scenarios we were hearing about in the summer were predicting.

It’s probably prudent for people in high risk groups to get vaccinated, but while I did get the seasonal flu vaccine I’m probably going to end up skipping this one unless there’s evidence that this is becoming a bigger deal than it appears to be right now.

Doug, thanks so much for taking the Flu vaccine. Now, I won’t have to!

Time to Stand Against Cass Sunstein

August 31, 2009

Late last week I posted a bunch of material on Cass Sunstein (posted at NetRight Nation), the Obama appointee to become the new “Regulatory Czar.”. Now, it is time to start writing and calling our Senators to make sure that they vote no on Cass Sunstein when they return from the August Recess.

To write your Senator and local media, click here.
